Summer is here! When the clouds burn off and the days stretch out, it’s a great time to kick that boring, wintertime indoor fitness regimen to the curb and enjoy some fun in the sun. With that in mind, here are some great ways to get out and burn off some of the extra pounds we sometimes tend to put on during the colder months.

Dust Off Those Hiking Boots

Here in Portland, great places to hike are plentiful. There’s Forest Park, Mount Tabor, the list goes on and on, without even mentioning all of the awesome treks only a short drive from home.

Hiking is a great way to get out in nature, get some exercise, and maybe even make some new friends. Just make sure to drink plenty of water, dress appropriately for the weather, and then drink even more water.

Get Sporty

Sports are a really fun way to get a summertime workout, and there really is a sport for everyone. Join a softball league, take some tennis lessons, head down to the basketball court for a pick-up game, or work on your wicked volleyball spike. Sports are an excellent way to meet people, but if you’re more of a loner, get that old skateboard out of the closet or throw your clubs in the trunk and hit the greens.

Cycling

Remember when you were a kid and you rode your bike everywhere? The wind in your face and sun on your back was the feeling of freedom. Then you got your driver’s license, and you were like, “Bikes? Psh. I can’t show up for a hot date on a bike.”

Maybe it’s time to rediscover the joy of two wheels. Cycling will buff up those legs, strengthen your core, and enhance your cardiovascular health. Who knows? You might just decide to leave the car at home more often. Make sure you wear a helmet and stay hydrated. Also, adequate lights are a must if you’re going for night rides, which you should, because they’re awesome.

Hooray For Water!

Water is definitely one of the best things ever. You can drink it, spray people with it, and play in it. Playing in the water is basically what summer is for.

Head to the local pool for some Marco Polo and belly flops. Cruise out to the coast and learn how to surf. Hit the river with a kayak and some friends. Take SCUBA lessons and experience the wonders of Neptune’s kingdom. You’ll get your exercise, have a blast, and stay cool at the same time.
