Are We Talking About That Kind of Hemp?
I’d say the hype on this one was burning, or that it was smoking, or that it was truly ripping through the headlines, but that would be silly. Truth be told, hemp seed and the health benefits contained therein have been on the healthy set’s radar for quite some time. So what is all the hype about, anyway?
Hemp is super high in protein, only it’s a seed. But don’t let that give you the idea that the hemp seed is easily dismissed, just because it’s a seed, or because it’s little. In truth, the hemp seed, much in the same manner as flax, contains all nine of the essential amino acids in that tiny little form.
The other great news about hemp seed is the fatty acid and fiber that’s contained in high amounts, including trace minerals, as well as Vitamin E. Not too shabby for a seed.
Hemp: Not Quite Marijuana, So Don’t Worry (or Get Unnecessarily Excited, Either)
According to most information you’ll easily find around the web, “Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant. It is not the same as marijuana, as it does not contain the high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the active ingredient that produces a high.” So the same — but different. The most common illustration we see of this is comparing a St. Bernard to a chihuahua. Both dogs, but clearly different.
Hemp seeds have the ability to give the body a complete protein, as well as the necessary omega-3 and -6 fatty acids in a balanced ratio. Throw in your B and A and D (and the E we already mentioned) vitamins, and now we’ve got a serious health ally. But wait! Wait! That’s not all! Iron, sodium, calcium too. And that fiber from up there. Don’t forget that.
More Great News About Hemp Seeds and Your Health
We’ve also discussed how some healthy things, including vitamins, are not necessarily that easy to digest, so some of the benefits are not optimized once ingested. But hemp seeds are known to be easily digestible, so that the body gets the most out of having them and their health benefits.
Hemp seeds do not contain the same phytic acid that is contained in soy. This is an anti-nutrient that’s very well trained in the art of keeping the body from absorbing minerals, so you don’t want it in your body.
